Muncar Hamlet is renowned as a captivating center of traditional handicrafts. Since the time of their ancestors, the art of bamboo weaving has been a living heritage in this hamlet, shaping a unique and irreplaceable cultural identity. From cangkingan baskets to kukusan steam containers, each bamboo weave reflects a rich tradition. Although the number of craftsmen has decreased over time, the spirit of preserving this heritage continues to burn brightly, with several young people remaining devoted to sustaining the craft amid the community’s shift toward agriculture and development.
The bamboo weaving process in Muncar Hamlet begins with harvesting bamboo from the fields, which is then brought home to be cut and split before weaving begins. Every five days, the finished products are sold at Karanggede Market, and the production cycle starts anew. While each weave takes only about two hours to complete, the bamboo must first be properly dried. This traditional process remains an integral part of daily life in Muncar Hamlet — a legacy that continues to be proudly preserved and passed down through generations.
